Position Objectives:

 

Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, the Public Works Assistant performs a variety of tasks related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment, vehicles, facilities, tools, and public infrastructure. Work includes handling materials, performing cleanup activities, and conducting general maintenance throughout the Town. Typical duties may include:

 

1) plowing snow and applying deicing material to roadways/parking lots;

2) maintaining roadways by repairing slips, cracks and potholes or applying new asphalt;

3) maintaining municipal facilities including park grounds;

4) mowing the City rights-of-way along roadways and other public property;

5) collecting litter;

6) inspecting, reporting, and repairing stormwater facilities (pipes, streambeds, outfalls, catch basins, etc.);

7) identifying public utilities; and

8) maintaining department fleet and equipment.

Employees perform routine tasks requiring acquired skills and knowledge.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:


1.       Preforms routine maintenance, at times using a variety of equipment, including, but not limited to roadways, municipal facilities, park grounds and facilities, right-of-way and    other public property, stormwater facilities and fleet equipment, etc.

2.       Operates snow removal vehicles and related equipment during the winter to maintain streets and public grounds, including city hall parking lot, as well as repairs damaged during snowplow operations.

3.       Assists with the maintenance and operation of Wastewater Treatment Plant, Wastewater Lift station, Sewer Lagoons, Hwy 2 well, and Euclid well.

4.       Assists with maintenance and repair of water lines, sewer lines, and other construction work.

5.       Follows safety requirements, including, but not limited to immediately reporting all accidents, unsafe conditions, and dangerous acts to the public works director.

6.       Completes daily work assignments by recording job assignments, performing the necessary and required work in an acceptable manner, and reporting to the public works director the status of the assignment in addition to any issues of concern discovered while performing assignments.

7.       Responds to callout after normal working hours.

8.       Performs all other duties as required.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Valid driver license
  • Highschool Diploma or equivalent

 

Desirable Training and Experience:


·       Knowledge of general construction, repair, and maintenance principles

·       Knowledge of general equipment operation, occupational hazards, and proper safety procedures

·       Ability to acquire and retain knowledge related to the methods and techniques of storm sewer repair, maintenance,

        and installation

·       Ability to work safely and effectively communicate verbally, in person and over the phone

·       Ability to address the public tactfully and courteously, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships

        with other employees and public officials

·       Ability to work outdoors year-round in a wide range of weather conditions

·       Ability to balance, climb, squat, kneel, bend, crawl, stretch, maneuver in tight spaces.

·       Ability to be subject to possible exposure to hazardous materials and infectious agents

·       Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds
